Hello all, The following post is not originally posted by me, I copied it from a windows 7 forum so that users will get more accessibility:

Win XP mode is a real yipee thing from Win7, now you can run all your applications running in win XP in Windows 7 without any hinderence.

Here is a quick way to setup the things.

Here's How:

1. Go to the Windows Virtual PC website, and do the first two steps for your 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7 and language. (see screenshot below)
2. Afterwards, click on the Windows XP Mode download button in step 3 at that site. (see screenshot below)
3. Click on Continue for Windows validation. When validation is complete, click on Continue to start the download process. (see screenshots below)
4. Download and Install Windows XP Mode -
A) Click on Save, then save the WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe file to your desktop. (see screenshot below)
B) Double click on the downloaded WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe installation file to start installing it.
NOTE: The part of the name in red will vary for you depending on what language you selected (step 1).

C) Click on the Next button. (see screenshot below)
D) Click on the Next button. (see screenshot below)
E) If prompted by UAC, click on Yes.

F) When Windows XP Mode is finished installing, click on the Finish button. (See screenshot below)
5. Download and Install Windows Windows Virtual PC -
A) At the Windows Virtual PC website, click on the Windows Virtual PC download button in step 3 at that site. (see screenshot below)
B) Click on Save, then save the Windows6.1-KB958559-x86.msu or Windows6.1-KB958559-x64.msu file to your desktop. (see screenshot below)
C) Double click on the downloaded Windows6.1-KB958559-x86.msu or Windows6.1-KB958559-x64.msu file to start installing it.

D) If prompted by UAC, click on Yes.
E) Click on Yes. (see screenshot below)

F) Click on the I Accept button. (see screenshot below)
G) When it is finished, click on the Restart Now button. (see screenshot below)
WARNING: This will restart your computer immediately. Be sure to save and close anything that you have open first.
H) When the computer is finished restarting, continue on to step 6 below.
6. Download and Install Windows XP Mode Update -
NOTE: Enables Windows XP Mode for PCs without Hardware Assisted Virtualization Technology. For more information, visit the Frequently Asked Questions page. While the Windows XP Mode Update download may be optional for PCs with Hardware Assisted Virtualization Technology, it will not hurt anything to install it to be safe if you are not sure if you do or not.
A) At the Windows Virtual PC website, click on the Windows XP Mode Update download button in step 3 at that site. (see screenshot below)
B) Click on Save, then save the Windows6.1-KB8977206-x86.msu or Windows6.1-KB8977206-x64.msu file to your desktop. (see screenshot below)
C) Double click on the downloaded Windows6.1-KB8977206-x86.msu or Windows6.1-KB8977206-x64.msu file to start installing it.
D) If prompted by UAC, click on Yes.
E) Click on Yes. (see screenshot below)
F) When it is finished, click on the Restart Now button. (see screenshot below)
WARNING: This will restart your computer immediately. Be sure to save and close anything that you have open first.
G) When the computer is finished restarting, continue on to step 7 below.
11. To Open and Run Windows XP Mode -
A) Open the Start Menu, then click on All Programs, expand the Windows Virtual PC folder, and double click on the Windows XP Mode shortcut. (see screenshot below)
12. Check the I accept box, then click on the Next button. (see screenshot below)
13. Type in a password and type it in again to confirm it, then click on the Next button. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: If you would like to be logged on automatically whenever you open Windows XP Mode (step 11), then check the Remember credentials box.
14. Select (dot) the Help protect my computer by turning on Automatic Updates now box, then click on the Next button. (see screenshot below)
15. Click on the Start Setup button. (see screenshot below)
16. You will now see this for a few moments while Windows XP Mode is being setup. (see screeshot below)
17. When serup is finished and you did not check the Remember credentials box in step 13 above, then you will need to enter your password entered in step 4 and click on OK. If you did, then skip this and continue on to step 18. (see screenshot below)
18. The Windows XP Mode - Windows Virtual PC window will now open. You are now in Windows XP Mode. (see screenshot below)
19. Set Windows XP Mode Settings -
A) In the Windows XP Mode window, click on Tools (menu bar) and Settings. (see screenshot above)

B) In the left pane, select Close/Shut Down. (see screenshot below)
C) In the right pane, select (dot) Automatically close with the following action, then select Shut Down and click on OK. (see screenshot above)
20. To Close Windows XP Mode -
A) Click on the X in the upper right corner of the Windows XP Mode window like you would any other window in Windows 7. (see screenshot below step 18)

OR

B) In the Windows XP Mode window, click on Action (menu bar) and Close. (see screenshot below step 18)

21. Installing a Program in Virtual Windows XP -
NOTE: You would install a program in Virtual Windows XP just like you would in Windows 7 with the same access to everything in Windows 7. For example, hard drives, DVD drives, USB drives, Windows 7 folders and files, etc.....
A) After you have installed any program in the Windows XP Mode - Windows Virtual PC, you will notice that there will now be a shortcut to it also in the Windows 7 Start Menu. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: Double clicking on the shortcut in the Windows 7 Start Menu will open and run the program in Windows XP Mode. You can now move or copy this Windows XP Mode program shortcut where you like in Windows 7 for easy use.

Security tab missing from XP folder properties

The Security tab is hidden by default in Windows XP Home or Pro Editions. This is the "Simple File Sharing" configuration.

To enable the Security (and Sharing) tabs, turn off Simple File Sharing option from the folder options.

Click Tools --> Folder Options --> View
Uncheck "Use simple file sharing"

2. Click User Accounts icon and click Manage your network passwords at the upper left corner.

OR

1. Open the Start Menu.
2. In the white line (Start Search) area, type RunDll32.exe keymgr.dll,KRShowKeyMgr and press Enter.

3. Click Close when done.

You can also edit these passwords:

1. Click Add or select the account you want to edit and click Edit.
2. Type the website or server location in the Log on to box.
3. Type your user name and password for this logon.
4. Set whether this is a website or computer you’re logging into and then click OK.

You can also take Backups, and also restore these details.

Increasing the performance Rating of Windows Vista

Its Simple, we just need to edit the XML file that holds the score for Windows Vista.Click on Start-> Control Panel ->System & maintenance -> performance . here you can see your Score.

1. Go to: c:\windows\performance\winsat\datastore

2. Right-click on the most recently created XML file and go to properties.

3. Click on Security tab -> go to Edit

4. Click Add and enter the username that you logged in.

5. Click ok

6. Select the entered id and check on full control.

7. Click ok—yes—ok

8. Open Wordpad > open file browse to c:\windows\performance\winsat\datastore

9. Select the XML file.

10. Under the Section, make changes to the score given. These are the changes we made to strike your score.

11. Save the file and restart the system.

Windows Vista : ERROR : Indexing error, Application becomes slow, system hangs very often.
Resolution:
1.-->Start in safe mode.
2.-->Go to: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows
3.-->Delete all the files there
4.-->Go to : C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Temp
5.-->Delete all the data, files there.
6.-->Restart the system.
7.-->Also if the problem is not solved:
8.-->Stop indexing by going to : Control Panel\Performance Information and Tools
9.-->Click: Adjust Indexing options à disable all the indexing options.
10.-->Restart the computer.

How to Hide the drives(c:,d:,e:,...etc) in Your Computer

This is a great trick to hide your data from being visible.

To disable the display of local or networked drives when you click My Computer.

1. Go to start->run.Type regedit.
Now go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Now in the right panecreate a new DWORD item and name it NoDrives (it is case sensitive).

Now modify it's value and set it to 3FFFFFF (Hexadecimal).
Now restart your computer.
So, now when you click on My Computer, no drives will be shown(all gone...).

To enable display of drives in My Computer, simply delete this DWORD item that you created.
Again restart your computer.

You can now see all the drives again. Magic........lol....

To reduce the number of services that start on bootup, you can access two different areas of Windows XP.

The first is the System Configuration Utility. You can do that by entering the command “msconfig” in the run menu.

The Services tab shows you the services that start when the computer boots. You can stop a service from starting by simply clearing the check box next to the service and clicking OK.

Now, say you have password protected the Dial Up Server, and have forgotten it or someone has changed it, then no one can dial into your system. What do you do? Like all password protection features in Win 9x systems, this too can easily be bypassed or changed. You do not need to know the previous old password to perform this hack. Simply delete the file RNA.pwl file in the c:\windows directory and the next time you use Dial Up Server, you will find that it will either ask you to enter a new password or simply not ask for a password at all.

There is a software called dvd idle pro which can really increase the life of your dvd drive. By using the Smart Read-ahead Cache, DVDIdle saves DVD data which will be played soon onto the hard disk cache or RAM cache, and then feeds it to DVD player.

This allows the DVD drive to rest.

Can't Log On to Windows XP?

IMP:: Read carefully before implementing

If that's your only problem, then you probably have nothing to worry about. As long as you have your Windows XP CD, you can get back into your system using a simple but effective method made possible by a little known access hole in Windows XP.

This method is easy enough for newbies to follow – it doesn't require using the Recovery Console or any complicated commands. And it's free - I mention that because you can pay two hundred dollars for an emergency download of Winternals ERD with Locksmith which is a utility for unlocking lost Windows passwords. See here

ERD is an excellent multi purpose product, but you should know it is not a necessary one if you have a healthy system and your sole problem is the inability to logon to Windows due to a forgotten password. Not necessary because you can easily change or wipe out your Administrator password for free during a Windows XP Repair

Here's how with a step-by-step description of the initial Repair process included for newbie's.

1. Place your Windows XP CD in your cd-rom and start your computer (it's assumed here that your XP CD is bootable – as it should be - and that you have your bios set to boot from CD)

2. Keep your eye on the screen messages for booting to your cd Typically, it will be "Press any key to boot from cd"

3. Once you get in, the first screen will indicate that Setup is inspecting your system and loading files.

4. When you get to the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to Setup Windows now

5. The Licensing Agreement comes next - Press F8 to accept it.

6. The next screen is the Setup screen which gives you the option to do a Repair.

It should read something like "If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, Setup can try to repair it"

Use the up and down arrow keys to select your XP installation (if you only have one, it should already be selected) and press R to begin the Repair process.

7. Let the Repair run. Setup will now check your disks and then start copying files which can take several minutes.

8. Shortly after the Copying Files stage, you will be required to reboot. (this will happen automatically – you will see a progress bar stating "Your computer will reboot in 15 seconds"

9. During the reboot, do not make the mistake of "pressing any key" to boot from the CD again! Setup will resume automatically with the standard billboard screens and you will notice Installing Windows is highlighted.

10. Keep your eye on the lower left hand side of the screen and when you see the Installing Devices progress bar, press SHIFT + F10. This is the security hole! A command console will now open up giving you the potential for wide access to your system.

I tested the above on Windows XP Pro with and without SP1 and also used this method in a real situation where someone could not remember their password and it worked like a charm to fix the problem. This security hole allows access to more than just user accounts. You can also access the Registry and Policy Editor, for example. And its gui access with mouse control. Of course, a Product Key will be needed to continue with the Repair after making the changes, but for anyone intent on gaining access to your system, this would be no problem.

And in case you are wondering, NO, you cannot cancel install after making the changes and expect to logon with your new password.

Cancelling will just result in Setup resuming at bootup and your changes will be lost.

Ok, now that your logon problem is fixed, you should make a point to prevent it from ever happening again by creating a Password Reset Disk. This is a floppy disk you can use in the event you ever forget your log on password. It allows you to set a new password.

Here's how to create one if your computer is NOT on a domain:

Go to the Control Panel and open up User Accounts.
Choose your account (under Pick An Account to Change) and under Related Tasks, click "Prevent a forgotten password".
This will initiate a wizard.
Click Next and then insert a blank formatted floppy disk into your A: drive.
Click Next and enter your logon password in the password box.
Click Next to begin the creation of your Password disk.
Once completed, label and save the disk to a safe place

How to Log on to your PC Using Your Password Reset Disk

Start your computer and at the logon screen, click your user name and leave the password box blank or just type in anything. This will bring up a Logon Failure box and you will then see the option to use your Password Reset disk to create a new password. Click it which will initiate the Password Reset wizard. Insert your password reset disk into your floppy drive and follow the wizard which will let you choose a new password to use for your account.

Note: If your computer is part of a domain, the procedure for creating a password disk is different.

There are lots of Vista Transformation packs available on net but I never use them bcoz they slow down the windows and also install a few 3rd party utilities . So I suggest its better to do all the things manual.

To make Win xp to look-a-like Vista, Following Are The Things Needed To Do That:-

1. Vista Style:-
First thing which u should change in ur windows is theme.

Windows Vista doesnt hv any shutdown/logoff dialog box just like XP hv but XP default dialog box doesnt look good. So here I’ll tell u how to change it in XP ?with my Own customized dialog box.

Now open “%windir%\System32\Shell32.dll” file in Resource Hacker and then replace following BITMAPs with the mentioned BMP files:
Now save the file and open %windir%\System32\msgina.dll file in Resource Hacker and then replace following BITMAPs with the mentioned BMP files:

11.Vista Drive Status Bar:-
In Windows Vista there is a small horizontal progress bar is displayed under each drive icon showing the filled/remaining space in the drive. U can also do the same in XP by using a 3rd party utility uploaded . Just run the file and it’ll add the progress bar in each drive. 12.Sidebar:-
Windows Vista also contains a Sidebar, which is displayed on right-side on desktop (by default and can be changed to be displayed at left-side). U can also use a sidebar in XP. Just download it fromhttp://www.thoosje.com/

P.s:-If u get error while saving the system files, then its happening bcoz of the WFP (Windows File Protection) service, which can be disabled using WFP Patcher or u can use Replacer to replace system files with my hacked ones.

When you right click on the start menu, only 3 options pop up:
Open, Explore, and Find. You can add your own programs to this pop up menu( which comes up when we right click on it.) Open Regedit and go to the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Shell Right click on the shell and create a new Sub Key (You can create a new SubKey by right clicking on the Shell Key and selecting New >
Key.). Type in the name of the application you want to add to the start menu. I want to add Notepad to the Start Menu and hence I name this new sub key, Notepad. Now right click on the new registry key that you just created and create yet another new key named Command. Enter the full path of the application, in this case Notepad in the default value of Command in the right
pane. So I Modify the value of the default string value and enter the full pathname of Notepad:
c:\wndows\notepad.exe.
Now press F5 to refresh. Now if you right click on the Start Button you will find a new addition to the Pop Up Menu called Notepad. Clicking on it will launch Notepad.
We can not only add but also remove the existing options in this pop up box. To delete the Find option, go to the following registry key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Shell\Find
Delete Find. DO NOT delete Open else you will not be able to open any folders in the Start Menu like Programs, Accessories etc. BMP Thumbnail As Icon You can actually change the default BMP icon to a thumbnail version of the actual BMP file. To do this simply go to
HKCU\Paint.Picture\Default. In the right pane change the value of default to %1. Please note however that this will slow down the display rate in explorer if there are too many BMP thumbnails to display. You can use other icons too, simply enter the pathname.To
restore back to the normal change the vale of default back to: C:\Progra~1\Access~1\MSPAINT.EXE,1.

Any e-mail attachment with a file type reported as "unsafe" is blocked from being downloaded.

The tapisrv.exe service is used by your computer by the 'Dial up networking' feature and any other process that performs telephony related operations.
It is a background service that provides Windows Telephony (TAPI) Support in Windows 98 and Windows NT 4. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated. Issues with the TAPISRV might be caused by a corrupt Telephon.ini file.
If the Telephon.ini file in the Windows folder is missing or is damaged, you can create a new one by running the file Tapiini.exe.

You can block messages from a particular sender or domain. The domain is the name that follows the @ symbol in an e-mail address. When you block a sender or domain, you do not receive any e-mail messages or news messages from that sender or domain in your Inbox folder or in the news messages that you read. When you receive messages from blocked senders, the e-mail messages are sent directly to your Deleted Items folder, and the newsgroup messages are not displayed.

To block messages from a sender or domain in Outlook Express, please use these steps:
1. In your Inbox folder or in the list of messages in a newsgroup, click the message from the sender that you want to block.

If you only want to apply this rule to new messages, click OK to close the dialog box. If you want to apply the rule to currently downloaded messages, check the box for the SPAM rule and click Apply Now.
12. Apply Mail Rules Now dialog box will be displayed. Click Apply Now.
13. Click Close.
14. Click OK.

After performing the steps above, if the issue is not resolved, please contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to block these messages. Due to the flexibility of Internet and E-mail standards, Microsoft is unable to stop a particular individual from sending e-mails. However, your ISP is one point where these individuals can be blocked permanently and you will not receive any unsolicited e-mails.
